What skills do you possess that you believe will help lead ACA forward?
Working daily as an archivist, librarian, and records manager has provided me with different views on the flow of information, which in turn has helped me become a better and more responsive archivist with a greater awareness of users’ needs. I appreciate the opportunity to run for Vice-President/President-Elect in order to help guide ACA as we become an even stronger organization that is responsive to our members’ and the profession’s needs. I have provided responsive leadership to ACA and possess detailed working knowledge from my time serving as the Regent for Exam Administration. A highlight of my service to ACA was directing the quick flip from an in-person exam to an online exam in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and then advocating for continuing the online exam since it is more economical for examinees while at the same time not raising the total fees to take the exam. I will bring that same “can do” attitude to the position of ACA Vice-President/President-Elect. My engagement with the Society of American Archivists also informs my understanding of the broad issues being encountered by archivists, as does my current personal research into archivists’ salaries. Some specific skills the I would like to highlight include a strong background in project management and strategic planning, being a flexible thinker, and a decisive actor. I have the ability to use both qualitative and quantitative observations to inform decision. I also have been working hard to bring others into conversations and providing them with a space to both learn new things and share their talents. I hope to be able to share these skills and more with ACA as the next Vice-President/President-Elect.

What skills do you possess that you believe will help lead ACA forward?
I believe my connections outside of the traditional archival professional societies is a soft skill that will be useful for moving the Academy of Certified Archivists forward. There are a good number of people who were trained as archivists and have the qualifying experience to be certified, but now are working in archives-adjacent fields like museums, galleries, libraries, and public history. By reaching out to organizations like the National Council on Public History (NCPH), Visual Resources Association (VRA), and Digital Library Federation (DLF), we can increase both our visibility and our numbers. We also will have a more varied body which will be a great resource for all our members. I am currently connected with NCPH and DLF and have previous connections with VRA so reaching out to their organizations for information about the exam and the Academy will not be a complete cold call.

What skills do you possess that you believe will help lead ACA forward?
As the current Regent for Examination Administration, I oversee all facets of examination administration and serve as the go-to resource for any inquiries related to the exam. I also worked with the Board and a task force to revamp ACA exam qualifications, expand increase ACA relevance, and better serve the archival community. Additionally, I proudly chaired the Graduate Course Preapproval Program, where I led the evaluation of graduate course syllabi to ensure they align with ACA standards and encompass at least one domain. Collaborating with a dedicated team, we meticulously reviewed over 85 courses, resulting in the approval of twelve programs that provide esteemed “ACA pre-approved” courses. There is an urgent need for open discussions within our community about critical issues such as pay, hiring status, and the value of the CA designation in helping our members stand out from other applicants. The escalating costs of a master’s degree, when weighed against potential earnings, are driving many archivists to postpone their pursuit of advanced degrees or to seek alternative careers that offer full-time positions, fair compensation, opportunities for advancement, and comprehensive benefits. Recognizing these pressing challenges, I plan to work with the Board to effective ways to support those who feel disenfranchised or dissatisfied. Throughout my career, I have cultivated strong leadership skills that empower me to effectively guide teams, make impactful strategic decisions, and drive successful execution of plans. My ambition is to harness these skills to drive ACA forward into a successful future

What skills do you possess that you believe will help lead ACA forward?
I believe my combined background as an educator and professional archivist uniquely equips me to serve effectively as Regent for Examination Administration. Prior to becoming an archivist, I worked as a public school English teacher, where I gained extensive experience with testing platforms, standardized assessment preparation, and learning management systems. As a department head, I led teams of educators through curriculum development and coordinated testing logistics using various educational technologies. This experience gave me a strong understanding of the challenges and best practices involved in managing high-stakes examinations and supporting students throughout the examination process. In addition to my teaching background, I have worked professionally as an archivist for three years and have a total of eight years of experience in archives and special collections. I understand the knowledge, skills, and standards expected of archivists, which is essential for administering an exam that accurately assesses archival competencies. I was also among the first group of candidates to utilize the Prolydian system when taking the ACA exam, giving me firsthand insight into the candidate experience and the importance of a fair, accessible, and well-supported testing process. My combined experience with educational assessment systems and the archival profession gives me a valuable perspective for this role. I am committed to supporting ACA’s mission and ensuring that the certification process remains rigorous, equitable, and reflective of the profession.

What skills do you possess that you believe will help lead ACA forward?
“Persistence and resilience only come from having been given the chance to work through difficult problems.” — Gever Tulley The field of archives has always faced a variety of challenges from funding and staffing to space and resources. These days, almost daily, we awaken to a host of new challenges affecting nearly every aspect of our work. It's essential to advocate for the value of archives within our organizations and the broader community of external stakeholders, donors, funders, or the public. I can support efforts to raise awareness, build relationships, and communicate the significance of the organization’s work through effective messaging and outreach. My career in archives began over a decade ago, and as I grew into my roles, I learned and grew as an archivist, and I developed, and supported a strong community of professionals around me. In the last few years, I relocated across the country, started over in building networks and professional support, and faced new and intimidating challenges in an increasingly hostile climate. But slowly, with each day, I’ve made steps forward and, with each small victory, kept the momentum going. As the Regent for Member Services, I will help maintain morale and enhance productivity. I can assist in identifying creative solutions to problems, and I will maintain clear communication between the ACA board and its membership. Working together with the board and the membership, I will help the ACA navigate these tumultuous times. Alongside my communication skills, resilience, and dedication, my passion for our profession is one of the skills and qualities that will allow me to effectively serve ACA. "With the new day comes new strength and new thoughts." — Eleanor Roosevelt

What skills do you possess that you believe will help lead ACA forward?
My philosophy in all professional service work is, “What can I do for you?” I believe that organizational societies should be spaces for professional growth for their members, and they should be dedicated to bettering and empowering their constituents. I have served for many years in regional and national archives society service groups, where I honed my communication, outreach, and leadership skills. Recent service includes my election as Vice Chair/Chair Elect for the College and University Archives (C&UA) Section of the Society of American Archivists (SAA) in 2022. The role is a three-year term that includes serving as Chair and Immediate Past Chair. One of the most active Sections of SAA, it is imperative for C&UA leaders to communicate with the membership by documenting and promoting the work of the leadership committee. One of my early tasks on C&UA was to organize and lead monthly Zoom-based coffee chats for the larger membership. This work required strong organizational and communication skills for all parties – presenters and attendees alike. I also recently led the Women Archivists Section (WArS) for SAA in an interim role. I volunteered to step in to lead the Section, including running monthly meetings, reviewing their Section bylaws for compliance with Council rules, leading the WArS annual meeting that summer, and holding WArS elections for the 2024-25 year. This work has helped me cultivate numerous professional relationships with archivists I admire and view as vital to amplifying our collective voice. As a member of the ACA Nominating Committee, I want to connect this network of colleagues to ACA and identify emerging leaders who can ‘help lead ACA forward’ into further growth and success.
