Position Summary & Responsibilities
Position Summary: The Kansas Historical Society seeks to hire a Traveling Archivist to support the State Archives in providing onsite consultation to promote records management and archives best practices for local and state government agencies and offices. The candidate will participate in preservation projects to improve overall access to historically significant Kansas government records and develop records retention and disposition schedules.

The successful applicant should have knowledge of:

records and information management methods and best practices;
archival methods and best practices;
electronic information systems including document and/or content management systems, imaging systems, and database management systems;
digital preservation methods and best practices;
metadata standards for archives, records management, and digital preservation
American history with special emphasis on western and Kansas history.

The position requires the ability to:

work with a variety of people and in a team environment;
balance multiple projects;
meet deadlines;
express ideas clearly, orally, and in writing to groups with varying expertise in the relevant subject matter.

Qualifications
Education: Education may be substituted for experience as determined by agency.
Licensing & Certification: Valid Kansas Driver's License, Certified Archivist credential preferred but not required. Digital Archives Specialist certificate preferred but not required.
Minimum Qualifications: Six months of experience in planning, implementing, and monitoring activities relevant to the agency's programs.
Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree in history or library/information science with archival administration concentration, or related field is preferred.

Are you interested in assisting ACA exam candidates while earning recertification credits? We are seeking volunteers to proctor the online exam June 11-13, 2026. Sign up here. The 3-hour exam will be offered multiple times throughout the three days, and you can choose the time slots that fit your availability. Each proctoring session lasts for 5 hours and is entirely online. It’s a great chance to meet your fellow CAs and to help future CAs!
