Position Summary

The https://library.buffalo.edu/specialcollections/ of the https://library.buffalo.edu/ seeks a creative, collaborative, and self-motivated applicant for the position of Instruction and Collections Archivist in the University Archives. Founded in 1964, the University Archives houses collections significant to the university dating back to 1846, as well as over 200 diverse manuscript collections detailing the history of the surrounding WNY community.

The Instruction and Collections Archivist will provide advanced archival primary source instruction and engage with campus communities to increase the University Archives’ presence as a teaching archive. This individual will take the lead in developing instructional programs for students and faculty across disciplines that highlight archival materials within the University Archives. The Instruction and Collections Archivist will form partnerships throughout the university and assist in processing archival collections in accordance with accepted standards and best practices.

Primary duties will include: 

• Designing and providing dynamic instruction and collection support including teaching introductory and special-topic graduate and undergraduate classes.
• Developing innovative programs to engage faculty members in archival course development.
• Supporting faculty, visiting scholars, and students in their research.
• Developing engagement activities and communication to promote the University Archives’ resources and services to the university community.
• Leading departmental collaboration, community outreach, public presentations and tours for individuals and groups.
• Following national and local best practices when evaluating, appraising, and describing the archival and manuscript collections for University Archives.
• Supervising semester-based student assistants related to University Archives manuscript and archival collection processing.
• Demonstrating commitment to continued professional growth and active participation in professional activities and service.

The Instruction and Collections Archivist will be appointed at the rank of Senior Assistant Librarian and will report to the University Archivist.

Minimum Qualifications

• Master’s degree in library and information science, or equivalent, from an ALA -accredited institution.
• Teaching experience in an academic setting.
• Experience working in special collections, archives, museums, or cultural heritage settings.
• Ability to prioritize projects, work on several projects simultaneously, work independently, and collaborate with library colleagues.
• Excellent interpersonal, organizational, oral and written communication skills.
• Evidence of the ability to do research, publication, and service consonant with the University at Buffalo’s standards for tenure and promotion.
• Demonstrated commitment to advancing justice, diversity, inclusion, and equity in organizations.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience providing archival primary source instruction for students, faculty, staff, and local and global research communities, with in-person classroom teaching preferred.
• Ability to work positively and effectively with students, faculty, and patrons from diverse backgrounds and holding a diverse range of knowledge in a complex academic environment.
• Familiarity with conservation, preservation, collection management and security practices relating to special collections.
• Experience in processing archival collections.
• Knowledge of DACS , EAD , and ArchivesSpace or a related archival management system.
• Experience supervising student workers or volunteers.
