Examination Information
The 2026 Certified Archivist Examination will be administered virtually. The three-hour examination will be offered at multiple scheduled time options across the three-day testing window.
Approved applicants will receive scheduling instructions in early to mid-May, including technical requirements and testing procedures.
ACA does not offer an in-person examination option.

Application Fee
$125 USD
Payment is required at the time of application submission. A "pay by check" option is available.
Cancellation Policy
If circumstances prevent you from taking the examination:
- Cancellations more than 24 hours before your scheduled appointment: refund minus $25 processing fee
- Cancellations less than 24 hours before testing, failure to appear, or inadequate identification: full fee forfeited
Retaking the Examination
Individuals retaking the exam should contact office@certifiedarchivists.org by April 30 to confirm their intention to sit in 2026. A new application may be required depending on certification status.
Activating the CA Credential
Candidates who pass the examination must remit first-year ACA membership dues ($75 USD) within 30 days of receiving examination results.
Once membership dues are received, the CA credential becomes Active and may be used, provided the individual:
- Maintains annual ACA membership
- Completes recertification requirements every five years
