Because anyone can call her or himself a consultant, employers should consider archival certification a required qualification for all archival consultants.

The Academy's Archival Recertification Credit (ARC) program allows organizations that sponsor meetings, seminars, workshops and other archival continuing education events to advertise the number of Archival Recertification Credits participants can earn.

Is your organization sponsoring an archival seminar, workshop, or institute? If the answer is "yes," you should have it pre-approved for Archival Recertification Credits, or ARCS.

What are Archival Recertification Credits (ARCS)?

Archival Recertification Credits are points Certified Archivists accrue toward recertification. Certified Archivists earn these points by participating in archival continuing education activities. A Certified Archivist can earn from two to fifteen credits by attending an archival seminar, workshop or institute under Section B, Education, on the petition for certification maintenance.

ARCS are somewhat analogous to Continuing Education Units (CEUs). For example, persons who take the Society of American Archivists workshop "XML for Archivists and Librarians" earn .75 CEUs and 5 ARCs. Click here (and then select "Schedule) to learn how many ARCs Certified Archivists may earn for taking other SAA workshops.

Why have your seminar, workshop, or institute pre-approved for Archival Recertification Credits?

In addition to SAA, other archival organizations may also note ARC points in their promotional materials. When you announce your activity through articles, listings, and press releases you may mention that every participant will earn credits toward certification maintenance. Upon request the Academy will issue a certificate to your organization confirming the number of credits accrued by participants in the activity, and this document can then be duplicated and made available to those attending the session.

Participation is voluntary and without cost.

How do you apply?

Ready to Sign-Up? Click HERE to complete the application (PDF).

Simple! Complete the brief on-line application form, including your e-mail or mailing address. The Regent for Certification Maintenance will review your application and assign the corresponding number of credits to be earned by attending the seminar, workshop or institute. You will be informed of the appropriate number of credits; and you can then include this information in the publicity for your event.
